New Jersey Fishing- What You Need to Know
Whether it’s surf fishing from the beach, bucktailing in the bay, or clamming and crabbing, New Jersey offers some of the widest varieties of fishing opportunities available. The Atlantic Ocean has thousands of marine species and each species is unique and has its place in the ecosystem. When regulations are made, it is for the consideration of each species, ensuring that no species is treated more important than others.
The Fluke season opened on May 25th with the NJ Fishing Council’s proposal for 3 fish limit at an 18-inch minimum. Click here for the status of the 2017 Fluke Regulations.
Here are some things to keep in mind when fishing in New Jersey:
- Anyone age 16 and older much have a valid license to fish the fresh waters of New Jersey.
- New Jersey does not require a general saltwater fishing license but there are a limited number of saltwater licenses and permits required. Most saltwater anglers need to register with the free New Jersey Saltwater Recreation Registry Program.
- Fish are measured from the tip of the snout to tip of the tail (except Black Sea Bass and Sharks).
- Cleaning or filleting of fish with a minimum size limit while at sea is prohibited.
