Dryers are among the least-discussed fire threats in the home, but can be a major risk when not properly monitored and managed. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), states that 2,900 dryer-caused house fires occur each year resulting in an estimated $35 million in damages.

Take these steps to lessen this severe fire threat:

  • Understanding the basics of cleaning
  • Clean lint out of the vent pipe every 3 months
  • Have your dryer cleaned regularly by a professional, especially if it is taking longer than normal for clothes to dry
  • Take a closer look at vents to ensure it is not damaged or restricted
  • Check regularly to make sure nests of small animals and insects are not blocking the outside vent
  • See the manufacturer’s history to ensure it has not produced dryers that have malfunctioned and caused fires in the past
